Flickr in Second Life

Flickr is a big part of the Second Life community. There are many groups devoted to Second Life snapshots of various kinds. It is so popular that you can send your pictures directly to Flickr from the Second Life viewer as well as any third-party viewers, such as Firestorm. There are three simple prerequisites for this. First, you must have an account on Second Life. Next, you must have a Second Life viewer to connect to Second Life (We recommend the third-party viewer, Firestorm). Finally, you need to have a free Flickr account. Free Flickr accounts will allow you to store up to 1000 pictures in your Flickr gallery. If you find that you want to add more photos, you can upgrade to Flickr Pro for $5.99 per month or $49.99 per year. The pro service will give you unlimited space as well as several other perks.

Once you have your Flickr account information and are logged into Second Life, you can connect the Second Life viewer of your choice to your Flickr account. The information in this blog entry details how to take a snapshot with the default Second Life viewer as well as the Firestorm viewer. Other third-party viewers should work similarly. Use one of the following methods to open the snapshot window.

  1. Go to the World menu item and the Snapshot sub menu item. (Avatar then Snapshot in Firestorm)
  2. Click on the camera toolbar item.
  3. Press Ctrl+Shift+S on the keyboard.
  4. Add the Flickr toolbar button to one of your toolbars.
    1. Go to the Me menu item and the Toolbar buttons sub menu item. (Avatar then Toolbar buttons in Firestorm)
    2. Right-click on a toolbar button and select Toolbar buttons.
    3. Left-click and drag the Flickr button to a toolbar on the sides or bottom of your viewer.

Once the Snapshot window is open, you can click on the button to Share to Flickr to bring up the Flickr dialog. If you clicked on the Flickr toolbar button, you will be taken directly to the Share to Flickr window. Once on the Flickr window, go to Account and click on Connect to connect to your account. You only need to connect to your account one time. The viewer will be trusted by Flickr after you have connected.

Once you are connected, you are ready to take pictures. Just choose your window size, any filter you want to use, and include any accompanying title, description, and tags you want to use. If your picture contains adult content, be sure to change your rating from Safe to Restricted before clicking on Share.
